Hey, lookie loo, an original fic!
Title: For Certain.
Rating: PG.
Characters: Captain Rutter, Meg.
Description: Just a brief scene where Rutter speaks to Meg in his cabin and wonders if she has used any of her skills to help him.
Note From Me: This is kind of experimenting. Rutter is a character I've had in my head for years (although he has had lots of different names, none certain, and Rutter is just the newest name) and Meg is a character influenced by my friend. Rutter has been paired for years with another lady - she also switches names a lot, but most commonly is Katrina. She won't appear in these stories, though. I'm planning on writing a longer story with these characters, so am just writing little bits to get to know them.

Rutter didn’t see Meg when he first walked into his quarters; she was sat on the floor with her dull brown petticoat pulled up a few inches above her ankle. She was hunched over several pieces of paper, covered with various strange patterns and scribbles drawn carefully with black crayon. When she had first stayed on his ship, only a year ago, Rutter had noticed her enthusiasm for drawing and would ask her curiously the meaning of the patterns she was drawing. Met with only vague answers, Rutter had long since given up asking, assuming that it was something only a mind like hers could understand.

He made his way over to his bed and, moving away the coif Meg had left there, he sat down and watched her draw intently for a moment. “I hope you aren’t becoming bored of this ship,” he said, “I know there hasn’t been much to do.”

“That should change.” Meg stated, prompting a look of confusion from Rutter. She lifted her head and met his eyes, a small smile forming on her face.

“You know for certain?”

“No, but I’d like for people to think that I’m always certain.”

Rutter stood up slowly from the bed and, taking a few steps toward her, ran a rough hand through her dark hair. “I’d like for people to think that too.”

Meg stood up, stepping on several used pieces of paper. “Are the crew still restless?”

“Yes,” he sighed, “they’re bored and getting hungry, I was expecting it.” He laid a hand on the side of her face suddenly, his eyes narrowing, “have you attempted to speak to someone?”

“A spirit, you mean,” Meg turned her head away slightly, “it’s not as easy as you think. I couldn’t force anyone to speak, even if I was stronger.”

Rutter snatched his hand away and turned away from her, his fists clenching slightly.

“Don’t be mad, Captain.” Meg took his hand in hers, unclenching his fist and slipping her fingers through his. “You know I’m not trying to disappoint you, if I could do this then I would.”

His shoulders slumped slightly, but when he spoke the tone of anger in his voice was clear. “Try harder next time.”

“I’ll try,” Meg muttered, defeated. She squeezed his hand gently but he didn’t respond. “It’s getting late, do you think you should sleep? It has been a hard day for you.”

“I should,” he replied, his voice softer. “Will you be joining me?”

She chuckled, “there isn’t much else to do, is there?”
