Blast to the past - in the Monkey Island universe.
Title: Family Life.
Fandom: Monkey Island.
Characters: Iago LaGrande (OC), Maria LaGrande (OC).
Rating: PG.
Word Count: 393.
Summary: Maria has an exhausting time with her son, Largo, but doesn't have a much better time with her husband, Iago.
Disclaimer: Although Iago and Maria are mine, Largo LaGrande, Marco Largo LaGrande and the Monkey Island series all belong to Lucasarts.

Maria stumbled back to her bedroom, having to grope her way through the darkness. She was exhausted, and felt that she could’ve easily just curled up on the floor in the hallway and dozed off. As she got back into the small bedroom she noticed with some relief that her husband, Iago, had lit the candle next to their bed. “Thanks.”

“Have you quietened him down?” Iago muttered grumpily as his wife got back into bed. Their newborn baby, Largo, had been crying for hours, despite his mother’s desperate attempts to calm him down. Iago had found it completely impossible to fall asleep over the noise.

“I did,” she sighed, “it’s not his fault, he was just hungry.”

Iago rolled over to face her, “I can’t listen to that damn noise all the time, I need my sleep.”

“I need it too!” Maria’s nerves were already short with the lack of sleep, she normally wouldn’t snap at her husband, but she just couldn’t help herself
.
“You’re his mom; this is what you’re supposed to do.” His expression softened slightly, and he ran a rough hand through her brown hair, “don’t worry, Maria, I’m sure it’ll get better.”

Maria smiled; she had expected Iago to react badly to her snapping at him and felt physically relieved he hadn’t. “I hope so. Largo’s difficult, but it can’t last forever. Don’t think I’ll be having anymore, though.”

“We’ll see,” Iago chuckled. “Oh, I thought I’d say, anyway, my dad’s going to be visiting in a week or so, he wants to see Largo.”

“Oh, that’s...great.” Maria could barely reign in the frustration in her voice. She hated her father-in-law, Marco, an aggressive man, who’d let her know already that he thought his son had made a mistake with her. She and Iago had had a horrible argument when he had insisted on giving their son Marco’s middle name but, as always, Maria had been forced to back down, although she still felt bitter about it.

“Maria,” Iago sighed, “just try and get along with him.”

“I do, but you know he doesn’t like me.”

“You don’t try hard enough.” Iago yawned loudly, rolling onto his back and trying to get comfortable, “anyway, he’ll be happy about Largo, he wanted a grandson.”

“I suppose,” she placed a hand on his bare chest. “I’ll try my best.”

“Good girl.”
